Part 3 - TCP/IP and the OSI Reference Model
At each of these layers there are protocols. The TCP/IP protocols directly relate to layers three and four. TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol (on the transport layer) / Internet Protocol (on the network layer). There is also a whole family of protocols associated with the TCP/IP stack, which can be found at many of the other layers. Protocols at each of these layers facilitate communication between the layers, smoothly transferring information. Figure 3-1 shows the seven layers of the OSI Reference Model, with common protocols used at each of the layers.
